CBD oil has become the choice for many people looking for a non-pharmaceutical product for many issues. It is a natural anti-inflammatory, or anti-seizure, anti-carcinogen, antioxidant, anti-anxiety, anti-depressant which offers relief for so many serious health conditions.
Cannabinoid is from the hemp rather than the marijuana cannabis plant, which is best known for the active ingredient delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). CBD oil from the hemp plant is not like cannabis THC. Since it does not have the psychoactive properties, it does not change the state of mind for the user. CBD attaches to certain receptors in the body to produce the effect. The human body produces cannabinoids on its own and has two receptors found all around the body and brain for cannabinoids, called CB1 and CB2 receptors. The CB2 receptors deal with the immune system, whereas the CB1 deals with movement and pain, and emotions, mood, appetite, memories and thinking. In the same way that THC can attach to these receptors to make certain changes, CBD acts on the receptors to influence the body to make more of its own cannabinoids. Receptors are tiny proteins attached to cells, and these receive chemical signals from the cannabinoids to create the anti-inflammatory, painkilling and other benefits that make this CBD oil so useful.
Studies have shown that this natural substance has such a diverse range of benefits for many physical and mental issues. A 2014 survey conducted at Stanford University which used CBD oil to treat children’s seizures, 84% of parents reported a reduction in their children’s episodes. 11% reported a complete cessation of the seizures. The rest of the group had varying results - between a 25 and 60% reduction. They also found, however, that sleep and increased alertness were added benefits. In another study in 2016, arthritis was researched by introducing CBD oil to arthritic rats. There was a significant reduction in inflammation and pain in the affected joints, without side effects. More human studies are needed, since most are circumstantial evidence from the many stories of individuals who have had such relief and many benefits from this naturally occurring plant property.
Researchers are aware of the lack of conclusive evidence and supporting data for the benefits. There is, however, promising evidence that CBD oil can help with withdrawal from addictive drugs and smoking. It helps with sleep and anxiety, pain and epilepsy, acne, Alzheimer’s, arthritis, schizophrenia and glaucoma. The dosages vary for different issues, and the method of delivery can vary, such as oil, powder, pills and chocolates or similar edible carriers.
It is important to be aware that even though the plants are both from the cannabis sativa family, CBD comes from industrial hemp plants, the male of the plant, rather than marijuana plants, which are the female of the plant, and have very different properties.
