An estimated 25 million adults suffer from chronic pain. More people than ever before are being most often treated with Opioids. Opioids include fentanyl, oxycodone (OxyContin), hydrocodone (Vicodin), codeine, morphine, pain relievers, and heroin. Opioids act upon opioid receptors by blocking signals and responses to pain. In addition to blocking pain, one’s breathing slows down, and a general calming and antidepressant effect is felt.
Unfortunately, opioids are addictive. According to the most recent numbers from CDC (Center for Disease Control), over 2 million people in the United States suffer from an addiction to prescription opioids. This epidemic results in over 15,000 deaths annually.
According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), published by the American Psychiatric Association (APA), people addicted to opioids have excessively stimulated the reward pathway of the brain. The effect motivates people to repeat that behavior, even when harmful. Thus, addiction to pleasure/pain reward cycle begins. Signs of addiction include an increased tolerance to opioids, losing interest in activities not associated with obtaining opioids, and increasing withdrawal symptoms without medication. Before people notice, an opioid addiction takes over their lives.
Metro Integrative Pharmacy is committed to finding alternative solutions to opioid addictions. Because prevention is the best policy, begin eating an anti-inflammatory diet. Increase consumption of fruits and vegetables, while at the same time eliminating processed, starchy and sugary foods. Avoid alcohol. Increase exercise.
